Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo had a tough night as the Chiefs were defeated by the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl. After a successful career with victories in four previous Super Bowls, Spagnuolo’s defense struggled to contain the Eagles’ offense, allowing 345 yards in a 40-22 loss. While the Chiefs were able to limit Eagles running back Saquon Barkley, Jalen Hurts and the rest of the Philadelphia offense found ways to score.
Chiefs star cornerback Trent McDuffie admitted that the Eagles simply outplayed them and said they need to learn from the loss. Defensive tackle Chris Jones was a non-factor before leaving the game with a knee injury, while the Chiefs pass rush failed to pressure Hurts. Despite efforts to contain the Eagles, Philadelphia’s varied offensive attack ultimately led to their victory.
This loss was reminiscent of Spagnuolo’s time with the New Orleans Saints in 2012 when the team allowed a record-setting 7,042 yards in a season. The disappointment for Spagnuolo comes as he had been considered for head coaching positions with multiple NFL teams. The Eagles’ dominant performance highlights the need for the Chiefs to regroup and come back stronger next season.
