Extremist Group in Arkansas Making Headlines in El Dorado News

In the late 1960s, billboards in Arkansas carrying the message “Get us out of the United Nations” sponsored by the John Birch Society sparked curiosity in the author as a boy traveling with his father. Founded by Robert Welch in 1945 to protect the Constitution, the John Birch Society believed in a global conspiracy involving the UN, the Soviet Union, and other entities.

The society grew throughout the years, influencing Barry Goldwater’s presidential nomination in 1964. However, by the late ’60s and early ’70s, it had lost momentum due to institutional and cultural checks that exposed its extremist views.

Recently, the rise of the New Birchers in Arkansas, fringe groups with similar ideologies, has led to infighting within the GOP. These individuals have taken over county Republican committees and caused disruptions during party conventions, leading to lawsuits and dissolutions.

Historian Matthew Dallek, author of “Birchers: How the John Birch Society Radicalized the American Right,” believes that the New Birchers have embraced conspiracy theories and extremist views similar to those of their predecessors. The author worries about the influence of these individuals on the state’s political landscape.

As Arkansas Governor Sarah Sanders, a MAGA supporter, navigates the state’s political scene, questions arise about her stance on the New Birchers. Unlike her predecessor, Governor Asa Hutchinson, who was more moderate, Sanders’ ties to the MAGA movement may influence how she addresses the growing presence of fringe groups within the Arkansas GOP.
