Arkansas Governor Sarah Sanders unveiled a maternal health care package at the state Capitol aimed at improving the state’s low national ranking. The “Healthy Moms Healthy Babies” bill will address issues related to pregnancies and births, including improving Medicaid coverage for pregnant women, increasing payments for pre-birth checkups and deliveries, and expanding access to maternal health care through doulas and telemedicine.
The reforms outlined by the governor come with a price tag of $45 million, utilizing state and federal funds. Arkansas has one of the highest rates of pregnancy-related deaths in the country, with 35 deaths per 100,000 residents. The legislation includes recommendations from the Governor’s Strategic Committee on Maternal Health, establishing Medicaid coverage for remote ultrasounds, blood pressure monitoring, and continuous glucose monitoring.
The bill also increases reimbursements for traditional deliveries and c-sections, making it more financially feasible for health care providers to offer these services. Senator Missy Irvin and Representative Aaron Pilkington, who will carry the bill, praised the governor’s efforts to prioritize maternal health in Arkansas.
The legislation aims to improve pregnancy outcomes and access to care for expecting mothers. It does not require federal waivers but will involve changes to the state’s Medicaid plan. The focus is on empowering community health workers and ensuring Medicaid coverage for expectant mothers to enhance maternal care in Arkansas.
