Walmart is making changes to its corporate office structure, closing an office in Charlotte and relocating some jobs to offices in Bentonville and California. The exact number of jobs being cut was not disclosed, but reports suggest it will be in the hundreds. Chief People Officer Donna Morris announced the changes in an internal email to U.S. employees, citing the need for increased collaboration, innovation, and speed.
The new corporate campus in Bentonville will be complemented by offices in Sunnyvale, Calif., and Bellevue, Wash., as well as expansions in Hoboken, N.J., and New York City. Some employees in Hoboken, Dallas, Atlanta, and the Toronto Global office are being asked to relocate to Bentonville or Sunnyvale, while some roles have been eliminated in the streamlining process. Walmart is providing severance pay and relocation support for employees affected by the closures and relocations.
These changes come after Walmart first announced plans for employees to transfer to Bentonville or Sunnyvale in May 2024, with a request for all remote employees to return to the office full time. The company is aiming to foster its values and culture through increased in-person collaboration, with Morris noting the benefits of having more teams working together. The closure of the Charlotte office is part of Walmart’s strategy to drive momentum and accelerate innovation within the company.
