Arkansas mourns the passing of Former Governor Jim Guy Tucker at 82

Former Arkansas Governor Jim Guy Tucker passed away at the age of 82 after battling an illness in Little Rock. Tucker, a Democrat, had a long and storied political career in Arkansas, serving as governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, U.S. Congressman, and prosecuting attorney. He was a key figure in Arkansas politics from the 1970’s through the 1990’s and was involved in several historic elections.

Tucker was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and moved to Little Rock as a child. He graduated from Harvard with a BA in government and served in the Marine Corps before pursuing a law degree and entering politics. As governor, Tucker worked on issues such as Medicaid funding, criminal justice reform, and economic development.

However, Tucker’s political career was overshadowed by his involvement in the Whitewater scandal, leading to his resignation from office in 1996. He was convicted of misapplying funds from a bank loan and faced scrutiny from special prosecutor Kenneth Starr. Despite this setback, Tucker continued to work in real estate development and cable TV operations.

Tucker is survived by his wife, Betty, and four children. His passing marks the end of an era in Arkansas politics, with many remembering him as a dedicated public servant with a significant impact on the state. Our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time.
