Governor Jared Polis is showing his support for the new management of recreation over Pikes Peak. A potential partnership between several entities, including Colorado Parks and Wildlife, is being discussed to expand recreational activities on the iconic mountain. The Pikes Peak Outdoor Recreation Alliance has brought together federal, state, and municipal partners, who signed a Letter of Intent in January showing their commitment to improve recreation options on Pikes Peak.
Efforts are focused on completing the Ring the Peak Trail under Parks and Wildlife’s management. This trail, designed to be a long loop around the mountain, has been decades in the making. Colorado Parks and Wildlife compared its potential role on Pikes Peak to its management of the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area, where it partners with federal agencies and private operations to run campgrounds and manage outdoor activities.
Various entities currently operate on Pikes Peak, including the Forest Service, the city of Colorado Springs, the Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway, and Colorado Springs Utilities. The goal of the partnership is to expand camping, fishing, hiking, and other recreational activities while emphasizing conservation on the mountain.
While no timeline has been set for the continued discussions, Governor Polis and other officials are focused on drafting a long-term agreement with Colorado Parks and Wildlife to enhance recreational amenities on Pikes Peak. This partnership aims to provide a world-class experience for residents and visitors alike on America’s Mountain.
