President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin had a “lengthy and highly productive” phone call, agreeing to begin negotiations to end the war in Ukraine. Both leaders invited each other to visit their respective capitals. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also spoke with Trump about a “lasting, reliable peace.”
During a defence summit in Munich, Zelensky discussed plans with US Vice-President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Trump emphasized the need to stop the war in Ukraine, expressing support for negotiations and a peaceful resolution. He also suggested a face-to-face meeting with Putin in Saudi Arabia.
The Kremlin spokesperson confirmed Putin’s support for working together to achieve peace. However, Trump stated it was unlikely Ukraine would return to pre-2014 borders. The US government’s stance on Ukraine’s NATO membership was also clarified, with Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth ruling out any likelihood of accession.
Zelensky emphasized the importance of US involvement in Ukraine’s security and peace process. Despite setbacks and conflicts over territory exchanges, the ongoing negotiations show a commitment to finding a resolution to the conflict. The BBC correspondent highlighted how Hegseth’s comments and the Trump-Putin call were perceived in Ukraine, suggesting that Moscow’s interests are being prioritized.
The situation in Ukraine remains fragile, with hundreds of thousands of casualties and millions displaced. The need for a comprehensive peace plan involving all stakeholders, including the US, Russia, and Ukraine, remains paramount for lasting stability and security in the region.
