The Thai army announced that 260 people rescued from online scam centers in Myanmar are set to be repatriated after being victims of human trafficking. Countries like Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos have become hotspots for criminal syndicates running online scams that have defrauded victims around the world of billions of dollars. In a crackdown on scam centers in Myanmar, ethnic groups shut down operations and repatriated Chinese nationals suspected of involvement. The recently rescued individuals come from 20 different nationalities, with many from countries like Ethiopia, Kenya, the Philippines, and China. The Democratic Karen Benevolent Army in Myanmar was responsible for freeing the workers and sending them to the Thai border. Thailand will question the individuals to determine if they are victims of human trafficking before sending them back to their home countries. Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai stated that Thailand will not set up shelters for these individuals and will only repatriate those ready to return immediately. The Thai government is working closely with China to crack down on scam networks in Southeast Asia. Chinese actor Wang Xing’s case shed light on the issue, prompting Chinese officials to inspect the border areas where many scam centers are located. Thailand has also taken measures to cut off supplies to areas in Myanmar suspected of housing scam operations.
