Arkansas Mourns the Passing of Former Governor Jim Guy Tucker at 81

Former Arkansas Governor and longtime politician Jim Guy Tucker passed away in Little Rock on Thursday at the age of 81. A prominent figure in Arkansas politics from the 1970s through the 1990s, Tucker served as governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, U.S. Congressman, and prosecuting attorney.

Tucker’s political career was marked by various successes, including his time as the 43rd governor of Arkansas from 1992-1996. He also served as Pulaski County Prosecuting Attorney, Arkansas Attorney General, and U.S. Congressman. Despite facing challenges, such as the Whitewater scandal, Tucker continued to contribute to Arkansas politics and beyond.

In addition to his political career, Tucker achieved success as an attorney and businessman, making a fortune in real estate development and cable TV operations both in the U.S. and overseas. Born in Oklahoma City, Tucker moved to Little Rock as a child and later graduated from Harvard before enlisting in the Marine Corps.

Tucker’s legacy includes his efforts to address a Medicaid funding crisis in Arkansas and implement various reforms during his time as governor. Despite facing legal challenges related to his business dealings, Tucker remained a significant figure in Arkansas politics until his resignation in 1996.

He is survived by his wife, Betty, and four children. Tucker’s contributions to Arkansas politics and his achievements outside of politics leave behind a lasting legacy in the state.
