Severe storm causes mudslides, evacuations and warnings in Los Angeles

A winter downpour in Los Angeles on Thursday led to mudslides on Mulholland Drive and prompted evacuations in areas affected by recent wildfires. Heavy rain caused flash flood warnings in burn scar areas, including the Palisades Fire burn scar. Evacuation orders were issued in the Pacific Palisades, Eaton Fire, and other burn scar areas. An SUV was swept into the ocean by a mudslide in Malibu, but the driver only suffered minor injuries. Mandatory evacuations were also issued in Orange County and Ventura County due to mudslide concerns. Overall, 32 million people in California were under flood watches, with rainfall expected to range from 1 to 3 inches along the coast and up to 6 to 10 inches in higher terrain. Despite all flood warnings being canceled by 8 p.m., the National Weather Service warned that mud and rock slides could still occur after the rain subsided. Evacuation orders were expected to last until Friday afternoon. City officials posted an evacuation map online to help residents navigate the affected areas.
