Tencent Holdings, the operator of China’s most popular super app Weixin, is testing the integration of DeepSeek’s AI search service into the platform. Users can access the DeepSeek feature by clicking on “AI Search” within the search bar on Weixin, providing a more diverse search experience alongside Tencent’s Hunyuan foundational model. DeepSeek-R1, an open-source reasoning model released by the Hangzhou-based start-up, has gained attention for its capabilities comparable to more advanced models from other tech giants but with lower training costs.
The integration of DeepSeek into Weixin would give AI capabilities to the app’s 1.3 billion active users, who rely on it for various services such as social networking, e-payments, ride-hailing, and more. While currently in beta testing, users in China can access the full version of DeepSeek’s model for free, providing them with advanced search capabilities within the Weixin app.
This move by Tencent reflects the company’s commitment to leveraging AI technology to enhance its suite of services and further solidify its position as a leader in the tech industry. With the potential to revolutionize the search experience for Weixin users, the integration of DeepSeek demonstrates Tencent’s dedication to providing innovative solutions to meet the evolving needs of its users.
