Eight people perish in flooding on Kentucky roads | The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

At least nine people have died due to recent severe weather in the U.S. with Kentucky being the hardest hit. Heavy rain caused flooding that led to eight deaths in the state, prompting Governor Andy Beshear to request and receive a disaster declaration from President Donald Trump. Hundreds of people were rescued from flooded areas, with most deaths occurring due to people getting stranded in high water. The storms also knocked out power to around 39,000 homes.

In addition to Kentucky, Alabama, Tennessee, and Virginia also experienced dangerous weather conditions including tornadoes and flooding. A levee failure in Tennessee led to a state of emergency being declared in parts of Obion County with mandatory evacuations in effect for residents of a small community.

In Atlanta, a person was killed when a tree fell on a home, while extremely cold temperatures in North Dakota posed further dangers. Across the country, from Michigan to Colorado, severe weather conditions led to fatal vehicle crashes and road closures.

Meteorologists warned of an incoming polar vortex event that would bring the coldest air of the season to the U.S. and Europe. Avalanche warnings were issued for multiple areas in the Rocky Mountains. Authorities urged residents to stay safe and be cautious while traveling during this dangerous weather period.
