Jim Guy Tucker, Former Governor of Arkansas, passes away at the age of 81

Former Arkansas Governor Jim Guy Tucker passed away in Little Rock on Thursday at the age of 81 after a battle with illness. Tucker, a prominent Democrat, had a long and storied career in Arkansas politics, serving as governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, U.S. Congressman, and prosecuting attorney.

Tucker was a key figure in Arkansas politics from the 1970s through the 1990s, narrowly missing out on being elected as a U.S. Senator in a close race against David Pryor in 1978. He served as the 43rd governor of Arkansas from 1992 to 1996, also holding positions such as Pulaski County Prosecuting Attorney, Arkansas Attorney General, and U.S. Congressman.

His career outside of politics was also successful, as he made a fortune in real estate development and cable TV operations across the U.S. and overseas. Tucker’s early life saw him graduate from Harvard and serve in Vietnam as a civilian war correspondent before returning to Arkansas to pursue a law degree and a political career.

During his time as governor, Tucker tackled a Medicaid funding crisis, implemented criminal justice and economic development reforms, and focused on expanding public education. However, his career took a turn for the worse when he became embroiled in the Whitewater scandal and was convicted of misapplying funds from a bank loan in 1996, leading to his resignation from office.

Tucker is survived by his wife, Betty, and four children. His contributions to Arkansas politics and his success in business will be remembered by many in the state.
