Arkansas JIm Guy Tucker, Former Governor Who Resigned Amid Whitewater Controversy, Passes Away at 81

Former Arkansas Governor Jim Guy Tucker, who succeeded Bill Clinton but was later forced from office due to convictions in the Whitewater scandal, has passed away at the age of 81. Tucker, who served as governor from 1992 to 1996, died in Little Rock from complications related to ulcerative colitis.

Tucker’s daughter, Anna Ashton, remembered her father as a wonderful person who loved music and the outdoors. Despite facing legal troubles during his time in office, Tucker was remembered for his dedication to public service and standing up for what he believed in.

Tucker’s political career began in the 1970s and included stints as attorney general and in Congress before becoming governor. He faced legal challenges during his tenure in office, culminating in convictions related to a government-backed loan and tax conspiracy.

After facing health issues, Tucker remained active in recent years, attending events and funerals for former political figures. He was survived by his wife, stepchildren, and daughters.

Former President Bill Clinton praised Tucker’s public service, noting that his tenure was unjustly cut short due to a “partisan witch hunt.” Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders also honored Tucker’s dedication to public service.

Tucker’s legacy is a mix of accomplishments in public service and legal challenges that marked his time in office. Despite his later legal troubles, Tucker was remembered as a tough and smart leader who worked to make Arkansas a better place.
