In a government-funded campaign aimed at discouraging young people from starting vaping, popular influencers like Big Manny and doctor/DJ Bodalia will use social media platforms like YouTube and Instagram to highlight the health risks associated with e-cigarettes. This initiative comes in response to a significant rise in the number of under-18s experimenting with or regularly using vapes in recent years.
Public health minister Ashley Dalton unveiled the campaign alongside a new research project investigating the effects of vaping on young people’s health, citing concerns about the potential long-term harm, especially for developing lungs and brains. The campaign aims to prevent young people from taking up vaping in the first place, as evidence indicates that vaping can lead to inflammation in the airways and trigger conditions like asthma.
To address the issue, the government plans to introduce restrictions on flavors, packaging, and marketing specifically targeting young people through the tobacco and vapes bill. The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health has warned that vaping can lead to nicotine addiction and potentially harmful effects on developing lungs.
A £62 million study will track 100,000 young people over ten years to provide conclusive evidence on how vaping impacts children’s health. This effort underscores the government’s commitment to understanding and addressing the growing concern of youth vaping.
