California’s attorney general has unsealed an indictment charging 30 detention officers at a Los Angeles juvenile hall with child abuse for allegedly allowing and encouraging gladiator fights among youths. The indictment alleges that officers stood by as children and teenagers engaged in fights at Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall, resulting in at least 69 fights with 143 minors involved. Some fights led to physical injuries. Attorney General Rob Bonta stated that officers were overseeing the fights instead of intervening, taking advantage of the victims’ vulnerability and their position of trust. The abuse came to light after a video of one altercation was leaked in January 2024.
The president of the L.A. County Deputy Probation Officers Union stated that the organization would support the officers facing charges, emphasizing their presumption of innocence and commitment to professionalism. The 30 officers are charged with felony child abuse, with the possibility of facing two to six years in state prison. Three of the defendants also face charges of conspiracy to commit a crime.
All defendants have been placed on unpaid leave, and arraignment proceedings have begun. The county probation department has expressed a zero-tolerance policy towards misconduct. Supervisor Janice Hahn has voiced support for firing any officers found guilty, emphasizing the need to ensure that those in custody are treated with care and respect. The indictment highlights the necessity for a change in the culture of county probation officers and a commitment to upholding the safety and rights of those under their care.
