Arab leaders are convening in Cairo to discuss an alternative plan to US President Donald Trump’s proposal to take control of Gaza and displace its Palestinian population. The Arab League summit comes after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu voiced his support for Trump’s plan, calling it “visionary and innovative.” However, Palestinians, as well as the Arab world and many other international partners, have rejected Trump’s proposal, citing concerns about displacing Palestinians in Gaza.
The cost of Gaza’s reconstruction following a devastating war triggered by an attack from Hamas has been estimated at over $53 billion by the UN. Palestinian families like Mohammed Dib Salem and his son have been left in dire conditions after their house was destroyed during an Israeli attack.
Meanwhile, Israel has introduced a new ceasefire plan, different from a previous agreement, in an attempt to force Hamas to accept it. Palestinian prisoners in Israeli custody are being used as leverage in these negotiations. However, Hamas has accused Israel of trying to sabotage the existing agreement by imposing a siege on Gaza.
As Arab leaders work on a separate plan for post-war Gaza in opposition to Trump’s proposal, the possibility of a resumption of war looms large. The fate of Gaza and its Palestinian population remains uncertain as international tensions continue to rise over conflicting proposals for the region.
