Our Knowledge of the Conflicts in Syria

In recent days, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported attacks on Alawite civilians in Syria’s western coast by unknown gunmen. The country’s new rulers have vowed to bring all armed groups under state control, but the security situation remains unstable, with some seeking revenge.

The attacks are believed to be carried out by small-scale cells of Assad loyalists, according to the Institute for the Study of War. However, on Thursday, pro-Assad loyalist activity showed clear coordination and planning, with the establishment of a group called the “Military Council for the Liberation of Syria” led by a former general in the elite Fourth Division of the Assad regime.

Syria’s intelligence services head, Anas Khattab, stated that former military leaders from the Assad regime, with support from outside fugitives, are behind the violence. The government has responded by deploying security forces in coastal cities and imposing curfews in Latakia and Tartus to conduct combing operations against armed remnants of the Assad government.

Col. Hassan Abdul Ghani, a spokesman for the Syrian Ministry of Defense, warned militants to surrender their arms or face consequences. Despite thousands surrendering, some continue to fight. The establishment of pro-Assad armed groups and their calls for the overthrow of Syria’s new leadership have raised concerns about ongoing violence and instability in the country.
