Three Bulgarian citizens convicted of spying for Russia while operating from a UK base | Reports of Espionage

Three Bulgarian nationals have been convicted by a London jury of spying for Russia on an industrial scale, putting lives in danger as they surveilled Kremlin opponents. Katrin Ivanova, Vanya Gaberova, and Tihomir Ivanchev, working for the GRU, face up to 14 years in prison. The ringleader, Orlin Roussev, received over 200,000 euros to fund the operation, which was orchestrated by alleged Russian agent Jan Marsalek. The group targeted Ukrainian troops, journalists, and dissidents in various countries, engaging in operations including surveillance and espionage. Police found sophisticated spyware hidden in everyday objects at the group’s operations center in Great Yarmouth.
The group’s activities included targeting Ukrainian soldiers, journalists investigating the Skripal poisoning, and Russian dissidents. These included dropping fake pigs’ blood on the Kazakhstan embassy in London by drone to gain favor with Kazakh spies. The group used homemade audiovisual spy devices hidden in everyday objects.
Roussev’s deputy, Dzhambazov, was in a love triangle with two of his co-defendants, leading to a dramatic arrest where he was found in bed with one of the women. The three face sentencing in May. This case highlights the extent of Russian espionage efforts, with the defendants facing significant prison terms for their actions on behalf of Russian intelligence services.
