The 988 text-to-chat service provides an immediate and confidential lifeline for individuals experiencing mental health crises, connecting them with a local counselor through text chat. In the past month, the center received 618 texts or chats, with more than half coming from individuals under 18, highlighting the critical need for accessible crisis intervention for young people.
Joshua Gonzales, President of the Board at Arkansas Crisis Center, emphasized the importance of responding with urgency and compassion to every text received, as it signals a cry for help from young people in distress. The center plans to double its capacity for responding to messages to meet the overwhelming demand for the service, with the goal of providing more Arkansans with access to essential mental health resources.
