A federal judge has temporarily ordered the reinstatement of thousands of federal workers who were fired by the Trump administration as part of reduction-in-workforce efforts. The judge, James Bredar from Maryland, issued a temporary restraining order against numerous federal agencies and departments that had terminated employees without providing advance notice. The judge found that there were no individualized assessments of employees and they were all just fired collectively.
The order applies to 12 departments including Agriculture, Commerce, Education, Energy, and others, as well as several agencies such as the U.S. Agency for International Development and the Environmental Protection Agency. The government had dismissed around 200,000 probationary employees since Trump took office in January.
This ruling comes after a federal judge in California previously directed six departments including Veterans Affairs and Defense to offer reinstatements to probationary employees who were terminated last month. The White House did not immediately respond to the ruling.
