In Mexico, Shocking Find of Stacks of Shoes, Ovens, and Human Remains

A group of volunteers searching for missing relatives in Mexico made a gruesome discovery at an abandoned ranch outside La Estanzuela. They found three underground cremation ovens, burned human remains, bone shards, and personal items. The Mexican authorities later found shell casings and metal rings at the site, prompting outrage and calls for action from human rights groups.

It is unclear how many people died at the ranch, and the remains have not been identified. The Attorney General’s Office has taken over the investigation, but the government has yet to reveal who operated the site, what crimes were committed, and for how long. President Claudia Sheinbaum has faced pressure to address organized crime, with threats of tariffs and possible U.S. military intervention.

The ranch is believed to have been operated by the violent Jalisco New Generation Cartel, responsible for trafficking drugs and engaging in other criminal activities. Indira Navarro, leader of the volunteer group that found the site, reported that it was used for training and disposing of victims. Young recruits from other states were lured with job offers and forced to carry out violent acts.

The local authorities had previously been aware of the ranch but did not thoroughly investigate it when they first found weapons and bone fragments there. There are questions about why the clothing and remains were not discovered earlier. President Sheinbaum has acknowledged possible negligence in the initial investigation and has called for a thorough examination of the situation.
