Rex Nelson, the senior editor and columnist at the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette since 2017, has had a long and varied career in journalism and politics. Graduating from Ouachita Baptist University in 1981, he started as a sportswriter for the Arkansas Democrat before becoming the editor of Arkadelphia’s Daily Siftings Herald at the age of 23.

Nelson also had a role as a news and sports director from 1983-1985, before returning to the Democrat as an assistant sports editor in 1985. He then took on the role of Washington correspondent from 1986-1989, before leaving to work as a consultant for Jackson T. Stephens.

In 1992, Nelson became the Democrat-Gazette’s first political editor, but left in 1996 to join then-Gov. Mike Huckabee’s office. He also worked in the administration of President George W. Bush from 2005-09.

In addition to his journalism career, Nelson has also held positions at the Communications Group, Arkansas’ Independent Colleges and Universities, and Simmons First National Corp. Nelson also hosts a biweekly podcast called “Southern Fried.”

Nelson’s extensive experience in journalism and politics provides him with a unique perspective that he brings to his work at the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette and on his podcast.
