New crew members arrive at the space station to meet NASA’s stranded astronauts

A SpaceX crew capsule arrived at the International Space Station on Sunday, carrying replacements for NASA’s two stuck astronauts. The four newcomers, representing the U.S., Japan, and Russia, will spend the next few days learning from the current station crew before returning to Earth in the SpaceX capsule that has been there since last year. The current crew, Wilmore and Williams, were originally supposed to spend only a week on the station but have been there for nine months due to delays in their return trip on Boeing’s Starliner capsule, which encountered multiple problems and had to return empty.

Upon the new arrivals’ arrival, they were greeted with hugs and handshakes, marking the end of a prolonged mission that began last June. The return trip for Wilmore and Williams was delayed further when their replacements’ capsule required extensive battery repairs, pushing their departure to mid-March. The SpaceX capsule carrying Wilmore, Williams, and two other astronauts is scheduled to undock from the space station and splash down off the coast of Florida, contingent on weather conditions. Until then, there will be a total of 11 astronauts aboard the station, representing the U.S., Russia, and Japan.
