Australia’s Foreign Minister, Penny Wong, has raised concerns with China over anonymous letters sent to Australians offering a reward for information on the whereabouts of an Australian-based Hong Kong dissident. The letters, offering a reward of HKD$1 million for information on pro-democracy activist Kevin Yam, were received by some residents in Melbourne. While the letters were reportedly mailed from Hong Kong and contained contact details for the Hong Kong police, it is unclear who sent them. Wong stated that the Australian government does not accept interference by other governments in its citizens’ affairs, emphasizing the importance of ensuring the safety of Australians.
Yam, who returned to Australia in 2022 after two decades in Hong Kong, is one of eight foreign-based activists wanted by Hong Kong authorities for their involvement in organizing anti-government protests. Despite the pressure, Yam remains firm in his stance against returning to Hong Kong until it is free.
Wong confirmed that she raised the issue with both Hong Kong and China, although there is no evidence linking the letters to the governments of either. Spokespeople for the China embassy in Canberra and the Hong Kong government declined to comment on the matter. The incident highlights ongoing tensions between Australia and China, as well as concerns over the safety and security of dissidents living abroad.
