Parents of missing Pitt student Sudiksha Konanki plead with Dominican Republic police to officially declare her deceased

The family of missing University of Pittsburgh student Sudiksha Konanki has requested that police in the Dominican Republic declare her dead, as her body has not been found despite an extensive search. Konanki, a junior in biology, disappeared on March 6 while on spring break with friends in the Caribbean island nation. She was last seen at the beach with people she had met on the trip, including Joshua Riibe, a senior at St. Cloud State University. Riibe, who was seen pointing towards the sea with investigators on a beach in Punta Cana, said he was trying to help in finding Konanki. He explained that they were in waist-deep water, talking and kissing, when a wave took them out to sea, causing him to swallow water. Riibe managed to get Konanki back to shore before she disappeared, thinking she had left. The Dominican authorities have confiscated Riibe’s passport and are investigating the incident. No signs of violence were found at the beach, and red flags were flying to indicate strong currents and high waves when Konanki vanished. Both Dominican and U.S. authorities consider the case a missing persons investigation rather than a criminal matter, and no suspects have been named.
