United States Ranked at Lowest-Ever Position on 2025 World Happiness Report

The United States was ranked 24th on the World Happiness Report, its lowest ranking ever. Finland remained the happiest nation for the eighth consecutive year, with Mexico and Costa Rica entering the top 10 for the first time. The report, released by Gallup and partners, ranks countries based on life satisfaction and factors like kindness and social connections that contribute to happiness.

One highlighted factor in America’s drop in rankings was the increase in people eating alone. The report also noted political polarization and votes against the system as contributing factors. Mexico and Costa Rica’s rise in rankings was attributed to larger family household sizes promoting positive social interactions.

The report also mentioned a dropped wallet experiment that showed people are more optimistic about others’ benevolence than expected. The Nordic nations were among the top countries for returned wallets, reflecting a belief in caring societies. Benevolent acts globally increased by 10% from 2017-2019. The top 20 happiest nations include Finland, Denmark, and Iceland.

CEO of Gallup, Jon Clifton, emphasized that happiness is not just about wealth but trust and connection within communities. The report highlights the importance of social relationships, kindness, and family bonds in promoting overall happiness. America’s drop in the rankings serves as a reminder of the value of social connections and benevolence in achieving greater levels of happiness.
