Game & Fish recognizes Tommy Sproles as its inaugural Black commissioner

Tommy Sproles, the first Black appointment to the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, was honored at the commission’s March meeting. Sproles, appointed by then-Gov. Bill Clinton in 1983, faced challenges due to the agency’s political landscape dominated by wealthy white males. Despite initial opposition, Sproles focused on diversifying the outdoors, particularly through fishing programs for underserved communities.

His passion for angling led to the creation of the Urban Fishing Program in 1988, which later evolved into the Family and Community Fishing Program. This initiative aims to introduce more people, especially minorities, to fishing and conservation. Sproles also advocated for wildlife management career paths at historically Black colleges and universities to address disparities in natural resources professions.

Sproles’ impact extended beyond fishing programs. He was instrumental in the development of Tommy L. Sproles Lake Pickthorne and pushed for improved wildlife and fisheries education at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.

While facing contentious issues like duck hunting regulations during his term, Sproles prioritized science-based decision-making. Despite initial backlash, Sproles gained acceptance from the commission and the public, leaving a lasting legacy in promoting diversity and conservation efforts in Arkansas.

Today, Sproles’ vision is reflected in the Family and Community Fishing Program, which hosts events statewide to create new anglers in underserved communities. His dedication to bridging the gap between minorities and outdoor recreation continues to influence conservation efforts in Arkansas.
