Updates on Trump: Hegseth’s Military Strategy, Trade Tariffs, and Government Layoffs

Yunseo Chung, a 21-year-old Columbia University student, has sued President Trump and administration officials after immigration officials attempted to arrest and deport her. Despite being a legal permanent resident and junior at the university, the Trump administration argues that her presence in the country hinders their foreign policy agenda of stopping antisemitism.

The involvement of federal prosecutors, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in the attempts to arrest Chung, signals a shift in the administration’s immigration crackdown towards targeting legal residents involved in pro-Palestinian activism. Chung’s lawsuit demands that the government be barred from taking enforcement actions against her and preventing her detention or removal from the United States.

The legal clinic representing Chung, CLEAR, has accused the administration of “McCarthyism” and claimed that the administration is suppressing constitutionally protected speech and advocacy for the pro-Palestinian cause. The government has justified their actions by accusing Chung of engaging in concerning conduct during a pro-Hamas protest at Barnard College and being linked to activities supporting Hamas, a foreign terrorist organization.

The Trump administration’s focus on detaining and targeting pro-Palestinian demonstrators, even those who are legal residents, has raised concerns about the government’s approach to immigration enforcement. The case of Yunseo Chung highlights the administration’s efforts to crack down on legal residents involved in activism that they deem as against their policies.
