Delaware House passes bill exploring new nuclear energy technology | WDEL News updates

A resolution proposing the exploration of small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) as a potential energy source in Delaware has passed in the State House. Sponsored by State Sen. Bryant Richardson, the resolution aims to establish the Delaware Nuclear Energy Feasibility Task Force to investigate the feasibility of SMRs in the state. SMRs have a smaller footprint than traditional nuclear reactors and can be up and running within three years of the first concrete layer. However, the industry has faced setbacks, such as the termination of NuScale’s six-reactor plant project in Utah. Despite these challenges, there is still interest in developing SMR technology at other sites. State Sen. Dave Sokola supports the resolution but believes the task force should consider a broader range of energy options. The resolution was initially opposed by Senate Majority Leader Bryan Townsend and Ray Siegfried, who believe more options should be considered. Sen. Richardson, however, emphasizes the need to move forward and freeze the frame to make progress. The resolution will now move to the State House, where potential amendments may be proposed. With the recent deactivation of the coal-based Indian River Power Plant, the retrofitting of the site for SMRs is also being considered as a potential energy source in Delaware.
