694 people killed as death toll surges in Myanmar earthquake

On Saturday, international aid started arriving in Myanmar after a powerful earthquake caused significant devastation in the country. The death toll rose to 694 with 1,670 injured, a sharp increase from initial reports. The military government confirmed extensive damage to infrastructure, leading to casualties and injuries. General Min Aung Hlaing warned of more deaths and injuries, requesting aid from other countries.

Rescue operations are underway in affected areas, with China sending a rescue team and Russia and the U.S. offering assistance. The United States Geological Survey predicted the death toll could surpass 10,000 people, exceeding the country’s GDP. Factors like the timing of the earthquake and building structures contribute to the uncertainty of estimating casualties.

In Thailand, where the earthquake also caused damage, a rescue mission was launched to free trapped construction workers in a collapsed tower. China, Russia, and the U.S. are among the countries providing aid to Myanmar. The Thai capital, Bangkok, saw nine deaths and 101 individuals missing, mainly construction workers trapped in the rubble. Efforts to locate survivors continued as rescuers deployed equipment and searched the debris.

Despite the significant challenges and loss of life, rescue operations and aid efforts are ongoing in both Myanmar and Thailand. International support and collaboration are playing a crucial role in responding to the aftermath of the earthquake in the region.
