David Hockney clarifies that he did not propose to paint King Charles during royal visit

Renowned artist David Hockney has recently revealed that he did not offer to paint King Charles during the monarch’s visit to his London home on Monday because he does not know him well enough. This decision reflects Hockney’s preference for only painting people he knows personally, as he previously declined offers to paint the late Queen Elizabeth II for the same reason.

In an interview, Hockney explained that he believes his paintings turn out better when he knows the subject well, criticizing Lucian Freud’s portrait of the Queen for not capturing her beautiful skin. The 87-year-old artist recently moved back to London from France due to constant intrusions at his former home.

Hockney revealed that his latest art show titled David Hockney 25 will open in Paris, featuring new paintings created in his London home. Among his works is a self-portrait with a cigarette, which serves as a pro-smoking message as he reflects on his longevity as a smoker.

Despite not painting the late Queen, Hockney did create a stained glass window for her, known as the Queen’s Window, which was unveiled in Westminster Abbey in 2018. The artist is best known for iconic works such as A Bigger Splash and Portrait of an Artist. In the interview, Hockney also expressed concerns about increasing bossiness in society, calling out “little Hitlers” among others.
