‘Rwake returns with first new album in over a decade: The Revival of Magik’

The newly resurrected Arkansas-based doom/sludge metal band Rwake released their album “The Return of Magik” on March 14 via Relapse Records, breaking the traditional heavy metal mold. The band reformed after a 13-year break with a refreshed musical style that defies classification. Combining elements of progressive rock, the album features dynamic shifts, unexpected tempo changes, and tender acoustic moments.

Rwake’s members, who have been playing together for 30 years, took a break to focus on family and other pursuits before regrouping to prioritize the band. The pandemic further emphasized their dedication to the project, leading to the release of “The Return of Magik.” Jim Dandy, lead singer of Black Oak Arkansas, contributed spoken word to the album, adding a unique touch.

The band’s live performance at the Rev Room on March 15 showcased their powerful music, drawing in a large and appreciative crowd. The band’s experimental approach and diverse sound captivated the audience, transcending typical heavy metal expectations. Rwake’s willingness to explore different genres, lengthy songs, and spiritual themes sets them apart from other heavy metal bands.

Both the imagery and music of the album reflect natural elements and evoke dark, evocative themes, creating a unique listening experience. Rwake’s unapologetic self-expression, willingness to experiment, and commitment to their craft shine through in “The Return of Magik,” presenting a refreshing take on heavy metal music.
