Phoebe Beltran, a 15-year-old girl, was attacked by a sea lion in Long Beach, California, while trying out to become a junior lifeguard cadet. She suffered cuts and bruises on her right arm but was able to return to school after being hospitalized. Phoebe was scared during the attack, thinking it might be a shark at first. Despite being bitten by the sea lion, she managed to swim to shore and call for help. The Long Beach Fire Department commented that such attacks are rare, and it’s uncertain if the sea lion was sick. Phoebe is determined to get back in the water and complete her tryout, despite the frightening experience.
