Alexander Ovechkin equals Wayne Gretzky’s record for most goals in NHL history

Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin tied NHL legend Wayne Gretzky’s record for the most goals scored in league history with his 894th career goal on Friday against the Chicago Blackhawks. Ovechkin, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, has lived up to his promise as an offensive force, holding numerous scoring records including most power-play goals, most overtime goals, and most goals scored for a single team. Ovechkin, currently third in the NHL in goals scored this season, has won nine Maurice “Rocket” Richard trophies and is a three-time NHL MVP. He led the Capitals to a Stanley Cup victory in 2018, winning the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP that year. Despite not advancing past the first round of the playoffs since their Cup win, the Capitals are currently first in the Eastern Conference and second overall in the NHL. Ovechkin, 39, has been playing professionally since 2001 and has a contract with Washington through the 2025-26 season.
