Government shutdown narrowly avoided | The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

President Donald Trump has signed legislation that funds the government through September, averting a threat of a shutdown. The bill keeps government funding at similar levels set in the previous year, with minor changes to non-defense and defense spending. The Senate passed the legislation in a mostly party-line vote, despite opposition from within the Democratic party. Meanwhile, in Ohio, a helicopter pilot died in a crash after hitting a power line and crashing into a reservoir. The cause of the crash is under investigation. In Colorado, a second person was arrested for using an “incendiary device” to vandalize a Tesla dealership. Tesla has been a target for protests and vandalism, including gunshots at a dealership in Oregon. In Florida, Adam Boehler, Trump’s pick for special envoy for hostage affairs, has withdrawn his nomination in order to avoid divesting from his investment business. Boehler will continue to work on hostage affairs as a special government employee with fewer ethical and financial disclosure obligations. He faced criticism for direct talks with Hamas, as part of efforts to extend a Gaza ceasefire. Boehler is the fourth Trump administration nominee to not make it to a confirmation hearing.
