The Supreme Court upholds Trump’s decision to end teacher training grants

The Supreme Court allowed the Trump administration to terminate Education Department grants for teacher training that were deemed to violate their new policy opposing diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. The decision was a first win for President Trump in his second term. The court’s conservatives were in the majority, with Chief Justice Roberts joining the three liberals in dissent. The decision said the district court judge did not have authority to order that the funds be paid. The administration argued that the grant recipients would not suffer irreparable harm from the funds being withheld. In dissent, Justice Kagan disputed this and said the grant recipients would have to cancel some programs. The grants had been awarded under two programs, and the Department of Education found they violated Trump’s executive order to eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. The decision was challenged in court by eight states on behalf of entities that receive the grants. The 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals declined to block a temporary restraining order issued by a district judge. The Department of Education had canceled about $600 million in grants for teacher training. The Supreme Court had previously rejected two other emergency applications by the Trump administration. Trump had also signed an executive order seeking to dismantle the Education Department, but doing so would require congressional approval.
