House lawmakers back proposal to reinforce existing laws prohibiting non-citizens from voting

Arkansas Representative David Ray (R-Maumelle) has gained support from the House to advance a measure that aims to amend the state constitution to ensure that non-citizens are barred from voting. The “Citizens Only Voting Amendment” would solidify the existing ban on non-citizens voting in all elections in Arkansas. Ray argues that his constituents want action on the immigration crisis and this amendment is a step in that direction.

Despite the fact that non-citizens are already prohibited from voting in Arkansas, Ray is pushing for this amendment to be among the three that can be referred to voters every two years. Some believe that the amendment is unnecessary, including the editorial writers at the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. However, Ray warns of the rise of radical ideas and uses the issue of transgender athletes to make his case.

Opponents of the amendment, such as Representative Diana Gonzales Worthen, argue that there is no evidence of non-citizens voting in Arkansas and therefore no problem to solve. However, Representative Howard Beaty believes that even one undocumented immigrant voting is a problem. The resolution passed the House with 80 votes and is now headed to the state Senate for consideration.

As the debate continues, the fate of the “Citizens Only Voting Amendment” in Arkansas remains uncertain. Ultimately, the decision will rest with the state Senate and the voters of Arkansas.
