House Passes Ten Commandments Bill, Sending it to Governor’s Office

Arkansas House Approves Bill Requiring Display of Ten Commandments in Public Buildings

In a move that has sparked controversy, the Arkansas House has passed a bill that would require the display of the Ten Commandments in public buildings and classrooms. The bill, SB433, passed with a majority vote of 71 in favor, 20 opposed, and two voting present. The final step for this bill to become law is the signature of Gov. Sarah Sanders.

Supporters of the bill have pointed to a U.S. Supreme Court ruling in 2022 regarding a Washington state football coach, suggesting that the legal landscape for religious displays has changed. Among the bill’s supporters was David Barton of the Texas-based WallBuilders organization, who is known for his expertise on the topic of religion.

However, opponents of the bill, including the Arkansas chapter of the ACLU and a group of clergy, have raised concerns about the constitutionality of the requirement. Wendell Griffen, a pastor and former judge, argued that the courts would view the issue differently than the Washington case.

Rep. Alyssa Brown, who sponsored the bill, emphasized that the Ten Commandments are already displayed in various public buildings in Washington, D.C. Supporters of the bill, like Rep. Cindy Crawford, believe that displaying the Commandments could help reinstate the country’s moral compass.

Despite the opposition, the bill passed easily after a vote was called for by Rep. Marcus Richmond. Those opposed to the bill, like Associate Pastor Brittany Stillwell, have expressed disappointment in the House’s decision but are committed to continuing their advocacy for religious liberty.
