Google and Sphere Entertainment Co. have announced a groundbreaking partnership to use generative AI technology to bring The Wizard of Oz at Sphere to life. This project involves the collaboration of thousands of creators and coders to enhance the film’s resolution, extend backgrounds, and digitally recreate characters. The Wizard of Oz at Sphere will debut in Las Vegas on August 28, 2025, employing Google Cloud’s infrastructure to support the immense data and computational requirements of the project.
Jim Dolan, Executive Chairman and CEO of Sphere Entertainment, has expressed excitement about the project, calling it extraordinary. With Google’s expertise in generative AI and infrastructure, Sphere aims to deliver a unique experience on the world’s highest resolution LED screen. Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, highlighted the partnership’s role in creating new experiences for audiences and opportunities for filmmakers.
Using Google AI alongside traditional VFX techniques, Sphere will present an immersive version of The Wizard of Oz on a 160,000-square-foot display plane. Key techniques being utilized include super resolution to enhance image quality, outpainting to expand visual scope, and performance generation to keep multiple characters on screen simultaneously. The context window feature ensures consistency and coherence throughout the film.
This partnership represents a significant advancement in entertainment technology and visual storytelling, akin to The Wizard of Oz’s impact with Technicolor nearly 90 years ago. By leveraging the power of generative AI and Google’s infrastructure, Sphere Entertainment is set to deliver a captivating and innovative audience experience with The Wizard of Oz at Sphere.
