Doctor from Massachusetts convicted of voluntary manslaughter in wife’s death in 2020

A doctor from Dover, Massachusetts, named Ingolf Tuerk, was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter in the 2020 death of his wife, Kathleen McLean. He had been accused of strangling her and dumping her body in a pond, but the jury convicted him of the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter instead of first-degree murder. Tuerk is scheduled to be sentenced on May 16, much to the disappointment of McLean’s family, who feel that he got away with murder.

According to the defense attorney, the killing was not premeditated but a result of McLean’s plan to gain control of Tuerk’s money and assets. Tuerk admitted to police what he had done, but claimed his actions were not premeditated. Prosecutors argued that Tuerk was calm and collected when he disposed of McLean’s body “like a piece of trash,” motivated by a desire to protect his money and assets.

Tuerk testified that the couple met on an online dating app and were married in Las Vegas, but he didn’t remember their wedding due to drinking. They reconciled during the pandemic after McLean obtained a restraining order against Tuerk. Tuerk recounted a night when they were drinking and McLean hit him in the head with a glass, leading to him strangling her in a blackout state.

The trial began on March 27 in Norfolk Superior Court, and Tuerk faces sentencing for the voluntary manslaughter conviction. The case has sparked outrage from McLean’s family, who feel that justice was not served.
