Federal judge denies injunction to halt immigration enforcement in places of worship

A federal judge in Washington denied a request to block immigration agents from conducting enforcement operations at houses of worship in a lawsuit filed by religious groups representing millions of Americans. The judge ruled that the faiths had not shown a credible threat of enforcement that would justify a preliminary injunction. The ruling was based on the fact that there have been only a few enforcement actions at places of worship and they were not being singled out as special targets.

The lawsuit was filed after the Trump administration rescinded a policy limiting where migrant arrests could happen and allowed immigration enforcement operations at houses of worship without supervisor approval. Plaintiffs argued that this new directive went against the government’s long-standing policy of avoiding immigration enforcement at sensitive locations.

A similar case brought by Quakers and religious groups in Maryland resulted in a ruling against the Trump administration, limiting the decision to those specific plaintiffs. However, a judge in Colorado sided with the administration in a separate lawsuit over the reversal of a policy limiting immigration arrests at schools. Overall, the legal battles surrounding immigration enforcement policies at sensitive locations continue to unfold in various jurisdictions across the country.
