Obama portrait to be temporarily replaced by Trump portrait at the White House following assassination attempt

The White House recently moved the official portrait of former President Barack Obama to make room for a painting of President Donald Trump with his fist raised in the air. The painting depicts Trump after an assassination attempt during his campaign, with blood and surrounded by Secret Service agents. This switch marks a departure from tradition, as typically the most recent official presidential portrait hangs in this prime location. Former President Joe Biden, who does not yet have an official portrait, is notably absent from this space.

The decision to move the portraits is at the discretion of the president, and Trump had previously moved portraits of past presidents during his first term. The Obama portrait was not the only one moved, as George W. Bush’s portrait was also relocated during the recent redecoration. Some Republicans, such as Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, praised the change, calling it “much better.”

This switch comes amidst other portrait-related controversies, such as Trump demanding the removal of a painting of himself from the Colorado State House and the disappearance of a portrait of former Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Mark Milley from the Pentagon. The White House Historical Association typically oversees the acquisition of presidential portraits, but it remains unclear why Trump’s official portrait from his first term has not been unveiled yet.
