Opportunities in Arkansas’ Outdoor Economy: Insights from First Gentleman Bryan Sanders

Bryan Sanders, the First Gentleman of Arkansas, has taken on the task of growing the state’s outdoor economy at the request of his wife, Governor Sarah Sanders. His goal is to double Arkansas’ outdoor economy within the next decade, from $3.5 billion to $7 billion. By collaborating with stakeholders in the tourism industry and implementing initiatives like opportunity zones, Bryan aims to position Arkansas as a world-class destination for outdoor recreation.
One of the success stories of Bryan’s efforts is the attraction of a downhill lift-access company to The Trails at Mena, a new bike project near Queen Wilhelmina State Park. Opportunity zones are also being used to recruit amenities like restaurants and outfitters to Arkansas’ state parks, with plans for attractions like a “via ferrata” climbing route at Petit Jean.
Bryan’s vision includes creating a trail system in central Arkansas similar to the Razorback Greenway in Northwest Arkansas, connecting various outdoor recreation areas. He sees the potential for Arkansas to become a playground for nearby states due to its unique outdoor attractions and proximity to a large population base.
Bryan’s efforts will be showcased at the upcoming Governor’s Conference on Tourism in Bentonville, where industry leaders will gather to discuss workforce, marketing, and industry trends. The conference will conclude with the Arkansas Tourism Hall of Fame and Henry Awards Banquet, honoring individuals like philanthropist Alice Walton and tourism leader Joe DeVito for their contributions to Arkansas’ tourism industry. Bryan’s message to the tourism industry is one of perseverance and focus as Arkansas continues to grow and develop its outdoor economy.
