The Central Arkansas-based nonprofit Potluck Food Rescue has launched a new mobile app that aims to streamline the process of rescuing and redistributing food to those in need. In partnership with Food Rescue Hero, the app operates similarly to popular food delivery service apps like Uber Eats or DoorDash, but for food rescue. The app allows volunteers to easily sign up, receive notifications for available rescues, and efficiently pick up and deliver food to those in need.
Potluck Food Rescue has been operating as a nonprofit organization since 1991, diverting millions of pounds of food away from landfills and into people’s homes. The new app, funded by the Blue & You Foundation for a Healthier Arkansas, is currently operational in three counties in Arkansas but has plans to expand statewide.
The app is designed to empower volunteers, ensure that rescued food stays in the community, and enable Potluck to do more with less. With the help of the app, Potluck aims to keep food waste to a minimum while providing vital resources to those facing food insecurity in the state. The app has already shown promising results, with volunteers successfully using it to pick up rescues and make deliveries.
Through partnerships with businesses like Community Bakery and The Bagel Shop, Potluck has been able to rescue and redistribute thousands of pounds of food each week. By tracking the weight of rescued food, Potluck can measure its community impact and help reduce its carbon footprint. The app is a critical tool in the organization’s efforts to combat food waste and hunger in Arkansas.
