COLUMNIST: Politics reign supreme | The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

Denver has been a pioneer in sanctuary policies, becoming a “sanctuary city” in 2013 and helping to make Colorado a “sanctuary state.” However, these policies have come at a cost to Coloradans. Legislation enacted by Democrat-dominated state lawmakers prevents sheriffs from cooperating with federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement to deport criminal migrants, leading to convicted criminals being released back into Colorado communities.

Denver’s current Mayor, Michael Johnston, has championed these policies, leaving taxpayers to foot the bill. The true cost of these policies can be seen in the lack of transparency around the number of criminal migrants in Colorado’s jail and prison systems. The State Criminal Alien Assistance Program (SCAAP) provides funds for incarcerating criminal migrants, but Denver has not applied for reimbursement since 2016.

This lack of transparency raises questions about Denver’s motivations and the impact on its citizens. Some officers have reportedly manipulated data to obscure the number of criminal migrants in the jail system. Denver’s refusal to apply for SCAAP funding suggests that the city’s leadership is prioritizing ideology over fiscal responsibility and public safety.

Coloradans are left to bear the burden of sanctuary policies that weaken public safety and impose hidden costs on the community. It remains to be seen how Denver’s leadership will address these issues going forward.
