Arkansas politicians Quintessa Hathaway and Chris Jones took part in a virtual forum discussing the future of the national Democratic Party as members seek new leadership in light of Donald Trump’s re-election. Hathaway and Jones are both candidates for leadership positions within the Democratic National Committee, with Hathaway running for chair and Jones vying for a vice chair position.
The forum, which marked the first event allowing Democrats to hear from candidates for the national committee’s leadership team, emphasized the importance of improving outreach and outcomes for Democratic candidates in traditionally Republican-leaning areas, like the South. Hathaway, an educator and consultant, highlighted the need for the party to invest in grassroots efforts and challenge gerrymandering practices that dilute the influence of minority voters.
Jones, who recently lost a gubernatorial race in Arkansas, emphasized the importance of listening to diverse voices and collaborating on policy solutions as part of his vision for the national party. The Democratic Party of Arkansas has endorsed Ken Martin for the role of national committee chair, emphasizing the need for a multi-racial, multi-generational coalition to represent the interests of working people.
The forum also featured other candidates for leadership positions, including gun-control activist David Hogg and Pennsylvania State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta. The Democratic National Committee, along with news organization Politico, will host an in-person forum in Detroit on Thursday to further discuss issues facing the Midwest in the upcoming election cycle.
