Europe is making significant strides in advancing 6G technology with the announcement of a €104m funding call by the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU). This funding is part of the EU’s commitment to next-generation networks and represents a crucial step towards Europe’s 6G leadership. The call, open from 22 May to 18 September 2025, is the first funding round of 2025 and aims to boost Europe’s 6G technology capabilities.
Managed by the SNS JU, the ambitious programme has already committed over €500m through its first three calls, supporting 80 projects across Europe. The newly announced call focuses on advanced and disruptive innovations in 6G, as well as the creation of experimental infrastructures such as a Telco Cloud and service platform. The goal is to bridge the gap between research and deployment, advancing projects along the technology readiness spectrum.
The 2025 Research & Innovation Work Programme outlines a research direction that includes network integration, photonics systems, and the convergence of Telco, Edge, and Cloud technologies. Sustainability is a key focus, with the development of greener, more inclusive connectivity solutions using Key Value Indicators (KVIs). The call also emphasizes security, promoting research into privacy-enhancing technologies, trust frameworks, and AI integration.
The SNS JU aims to influence global 6G standardization and strengthen ties with international partners, including collaboration with the US under the Trade and Technology Council. In addition to research and infrastructure, there are plans for large-scale 6G trials in sectors such as manufacturing, media, and transportation in 2025. Overall, Europe’s investment in 6G technology through the SNS JU is paving the way for a smarter, more secure, and sustainable digital future.
