Hamas loses communication with captors of American-Israeli hostage Edan Alexander

Fears are growing for Edan Alexander, the last living U.S. citizen held hostage in Gaza, as Hamas reported losing contact with the group holding him after Israeli strikes in the area. Alexander, who was taken hostage during a Hamas-led terror attack in 2023, is among 59 hostages still held in Gaza, although less than half are believed to be alive. His family has expressed concerns after a video of him, likely speaking under duress, was released by Hamas. The organization had previously stated its willingness to release Alexander and four other dual-nationals, but negotiations were stalled after Israel resumed airstrikes on the enclave. Israeli forces shattered a ceasefire deal, leading to renewed hostilities and calls for Hamas to release the hostages. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited Gaza, warning Hamas of more attacks until the hostages are freed. Pressure is mounting on Netanyahu to end the conflict, with former members of Israel’s intelligence and military also calling for a resolution. The Hostages and Missing Families Forum has dismissed Hamas’ credibility, maintaining concerns about the safety of those held captive in Gaza. The situation remains uncertain as efforts to secure Alexander’s release continue amidst escalating violence.
