Hong Kong suspends mail service to US due to Trump’s tariff disputes

Hong Kong Post has announced the suspension of goods mail services by sea to the US and will soon suspend its air mail service for items containing goods starting from 27 April. This decision comes in response to what the post office describes as “bullying” US tariffs imposed on goods from Hong Kong.

In a statement, Hong Kong Post expressed concerns that people in Hong Kong sending items to the US may be faced with exorbitant and unreasonable fees due to the US’s alleged acts of bullying through tariffs. The post office emphasized that it will not collect any tariffs on behalf of the US.

The suspension only affects postal items containing goods, while items with documents only will continue to be processed without any disruption. This move is in response to the US government’s removal of the “de minimus” exemption and the increase in tariffs for goods from Hong Kong to the US, set to take effect from 2 May.

Hong Kong has traditionally been known as a free and open trading hub, but tensions have risen following China’s implementation of a national security law in the region in 2020. This move led to the US revoking Hong Kong’s special status under US law, resulting in economic repercussions for the financial hub.
